Baby Boomers
Builders Challenged as Baby Boomers Age
Baby Boomers will continue to dominate U.S. demographics in the years to come, making up 25 percent of the population by 2010. Five years ago, this group–currently 45 to 54 years of age–owned 43 percent of all houses in the United States. As many of them enter the next stage of life, Boomers will be looking to spend as much time as possible in their own houses. As a result, this market segment represents a huge opportunity for home remodelers.
The AARP survey, “Fixing to Stay: A National Survey of Housing and Home Modification Issues,” does point out, however, that many in this age group would consider moving to a new home with enhanced features that would improve quality of life and security.Builders looking to appeal to Boomers would do well by incorporating adaptable features into new-home construction. The survey found that even if Boomers eventually require help to care for themselves, 82 percent of the respondents said they would prefer not to move from their current residence.
