ITNCharlestonTrident Celebrates 1st Anniversary
Local and State Officials Participate in “Look Who’s Driving”
Charleston, SC – ITNCharlestonTrident will celebrate its first anniversary on Thursday, November 15, 2007 with several local officials and one state official serving as volunteer drivers who will provide rides for senior or visually impaired member riders of ITN.
Curtis Loftis, Jr., Director of the Office on Aging for the State of South Carolina, Tim Scott, Charleston County Council Chairman, Mount Pleasant Mayor Harry Hallman and North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey will provide rides for member riders to appointments around the Lowcountry.
ITNCharlestonTrident is a non-profit transportation service for people 65 years and older and the visually impaired. ITN provides door-through-door rides, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no restrictions on ride purpose. Volunteer drivers provide the majority of the rides with an emphasis on providing dignified transportation for the member riders and enables seniors and the visually impaired to enjoy the independence and safety afforded by membership in ITN.
Since beginning operations a year ago, ITNCharlestonTrident has provided more than 3000 rides with the majority of destinations being for medical appointments followed by trips including the grocery store, beauty salon, pharmacy and movies. Member riders join by paying an annual fee and placing funds in a personal transportation account. Fees for the cost of the mileage to and from destinations are deducted from the members account. The cost for a ride through ITN is normally less than one half of the cost of a taxi ride.
ITNCharleston Trident is supported in part by Trident United Way, Association For The Blind, Roper St. Francis Healthcare and the Medical University of South Carolina. For more information on joining ITN as a member rider or to volunteer to drive, phone (843) 225-2715.
