What is Alzheimer’s Disease
It’s a progressive, degenerative illness that affects the brain. Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia - the loss of mental abilities so severe that daily functioning can become quite difficult. The disease causes impaired memory and other mental functions of the brain.
So far, researchers have not found a way to cure or prevent Alzheimer’s. However, significant progress is being made in understanding and treating this highly complex condition.
What are it’s causes?
The medical establishment is still unsure or unclear as to the exact cause of Alzheimer’s. Some scientists theorize that Alsheimers may be caused by genetic predisposition and toxins in the environment.
What are the symptoms?
1. Increased forgetfulness
2. Disorientation
3. Misplacing things
4. Changes in mood or behavior
5. Poor judgement
6. Problems doing routine things
7. Impaired language skills
If you have any of these symptoms that concern you, see your doctor. He or she may perform physical, psychiatric or neurological evaluations and blood or urine tests.
Don’t assume that Alzheimer’s disease will be the diagnosis. People may have similar symptoms from depression, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, drug interactions or thyroid problems. That is why it is important to see your doctor when ever you or some one you love is having symptoms.
